After his active career as a pro cyclist, Wolfgang Steinmayr founded the insurance brokerage firm Steinmayr & Partner in 1970, one of the first in Austria to provide neutral comparison and independent support in the event of damage. Both are now an indispensable part of the corporate sector.
His son Christian Steinmayr and his Partner Michael Perlornigg have successfully run the family business as an international insurance brokerage firm since 2010 under the name Steinmayr & Co. The company gradually expanded and grew with a global network of international contacts. The partnership with Renomia & Gallagher and the Steinmayr & Co branch in Vienna have been important steps in this direction.
Our international orientation enables Steinmayr & Co access to exclusive insurance products that would be unavailable on local markets. However complex the challenges, we find the right solution. Our private ownership structure provides the independence and necessary flexibility to individually assess and support risks of any magnitude. Insurance with vision
The cornerstone of our company was laid in 1970 when Wolfgang Steinmayr, former pro cyclist and four-time winner of the Tour of Austria, founded the insurance brokerage firm ‘Wolfgang D. Steinmayr & Partner’ in Innsbruck. Even during his active cycling career, he established the company and developed it with passion and perseverance to Western Austria’s premier address for an independent comparison of insurance companies and as a specialist for handling insurance claims.
Our story
Sports meets insurance
- In the 1970s, Wolfgang was one of the most successful racing cyclists in Austria – he won the Tour of Austria four times (a record that still stands), won numerous state championships, and participated in the Olympics in 1972 and 1976.
- After he stepped down, he dedicated himself to his brokering business for decades.
- He was also the Group Spokesman for the insurance brokers in the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce for many years, and finally the Federal Chairperson of the Austrian Board of Insurance Brokers – making his the most powerful voice in the industry.
The groundwork for major events
Even at an early stage, the company specialised in major events, winter sports, and tourism insurance – from the Hahnenkamm Races to world cups. Wolfgang negotiated insurance cover solutions for TV events, cancellation insurance, and complex risks such as weather or terrorism.
Milestones on the way
1970
Steinmayr & Partner founded by KR (Kommerzialrat – Commercial Councillor) Wolfgang Steinmayr in Innsbruck.
1970s–1990s
Established as a pioneer in the area of major events, tourism, and sports insurance.
1998
Confirmed as the Federal Chairperson of the Austrian Board of Insurance Brokers.
2000s
Partnership with Raiffeisen strengthens the market position. Christian Steinmayr joins the company.
2004–2010
Christian Steinmayr deepens the knowledge of insurance policies at Allianz Marine & Aviation in London, Kessler & Co in Zurich, and finally as the Global Insurance Manager of the Red Bull Group in Fuschl am See.
2010
New establishment: Christian Steinmayr & Michael Perlornigg found Steinmayr & Co Insurance Brokers GmbH as a specialist for commercial and industrial insurance.
2011
Steinmayr & Co takes over Raiffeisen’s client base and employees.
2011–2023
Gradual expansion of the company at the Innsbruck location and restructuring with service departments for Claims and Risk Management in addition to the conventional customer support. Partnership with Unison Steadfast Brokers enables optimal support of all customers outside Austria.
2024
Renomia joins the company as a partner with a minority share. With this step, Steinmayr became an Austrian point of contact for Renomia and for the Gallagher Group.
2024
Opening of the branch office in Vienna, and establishment the of Steinmayr & Co Broking Center for processing coverage concepts and placing complex risks.
2025
Through a majority takeover of Gerald Sattler Versicherungsmakler GmbH, ‘Steinmayr & Sattler Insurance Brokers GmbH’ is founded at the new location in Schruns as a point of contact for commercial and private clients in Vorarlberg.
